Researchers at Houston Methodist used computer modeling to find an existing investigational drug compound for leukemia patients to treat triple negative breast cancer once it spreads to the brain. The Houston Methodist researchers culled through thousands of existing drugs to see if they could identify a compound that would prevent cancer cells from spreading, or metastasizing. The risk of a second breast cancer in patients with high-risk BRCA gene mutations can be more precisely predicted by testing for several other genetic variants, each of which are known to have a small impact on breast cancer risk. Breast cancer patients who are diagnosed at a very young age, or who have a strong family history of the disease are regularly found to carry a mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has put out updated guidelines on whole-breast radiation therapy. The updated guidelines say that most women diagnosed with breast cancer should be treated with accelerated whole-breast irradiation as the standard of care. The new guideline greatly increases the number of women recommended to have accelerated whole-breast irradiation. The updated guidelines were published online on March 12, 2018 by the journal Practical Radiation Oncology.

The United States Mint recently released a new limited edition coin under its Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Program to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for research, according to a press release. Obesity may be the reason that some cancers become resistant to drugs intended to stop the formation of new blood vessels that fuel tumor growth, according to recent research led by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
